Ikegami Tarozaemon
Year of death: 15th February 1798 (31st March 1798)
Year of birth: 1718
A developer of new fields and industrial entrepreneur in the mid-Edo period. Born in Daishigawara Village, Tachibana County, Musashi Province (Kawasaki City). His family name was Yukitoyo. In 1752, he received permission to develop 15 chobu (approx. 1000 m2) of coastal beaches and outshore islands, and developed Ikegami Shinden. The development of new fields is unique in that it was coastal beaches and outshore islands, and he called himself an "undersea new field developer." He also worked hard to develop industries such as salt production, sugar cane sugar, and ginseng. He is known for his efforts in particular to spread sugar cane sugar throughout the country. It was largely due to the efforts of Ikegami that sugar production became possible throughout the country during the late Edo period, and he established his position as the "originator of Japanese sugar manufacturing." <References> Matsuyoshi Sadao, "Study of New Fields," Sengoku Tsuruyoshi, "On Ikegami Yukitoyo and the Spread of Japanese Sugar Manufacturing" (Research in Japanese Regional History)
