An old town on the northeast shore of Lake Biwa in Sakata District, Shiga Prefecture. The Hokuriku Main Line runs through the town. Rice is cultivated, and the town's specialty products are silk floss and mosquito nets. Bedding is also manufactured here. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar site.
