Weng Tong-he (English: Weng Tong-ho)

Chinese politician in the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. Son of the University Scholar Weng Xincun. In 1856 (Xianfeng 6), he passed the Jinshi examination with top marks. He rose through the ranks, serving as Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Military Affairs. He was also highly trusted by Emperor Guangxu as his tutor, and was at odds with the Empress Dowager Cixi faction. During the First Sino-Japanese War, he advocated war and opposed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, and in 1898 (Guangxu 24), he advised Emperor Guangxu to carry out political reforms by appointing Kang Youwei. He was ousted and punished after the failure of the Reform (→ Self-reform Movement), and later died in his hometown. His diary, the Diary of Weng Wengong, is a valuable historical document.

中国，清末の政治家。江蘇省常熟の人。大学士，翁心存の子。咸豊6（1856）年，首席で進士に合格。栄進して戸部尚書，軍機大臣を歴任した。また光緒帝の師傅として帝の信任厚く，西太后派とは対立した。日清戦争時には主戦論，下関条約反対論を主張，光緒24（1898）年には康有為登用による政治改革を光緒帝に進言した。変法（→変法自彊運動）の失敗によって失脚，処罰され，のち故郷で死んだ。その日記『翁文恭公日記』は貴重な史料である。
