Great Fire of London - London Fire
A great fire broke out in the City of London in 1666. It started in a bakery in Pudding Lane on September 2nd, and by the 7th, about four-fifths of the City had been burned down. 13,000 houses were damaged, as were 89 parish churches including St. Paul's Cathedral, and public facilities such as the Guild Hall, but the loss of life was extremely minor. Reflecting the political situation at the time, some people suggested that it was arson by Catholics, but it is more likely that it was an accident. For the reconstruction, architect C. Wren was mobilized to design many parish churches including St. Paul's Cathedral, and wooden buildings were banned, so the basic landscape we see today was established at this time. In 1677, the Great Fire Memorial was built, which is now a tourist attraction.
