Pedro de Mendoza

… [Keiko Imai]
【history】
In 1516, when Juan Diaz de Solis, the first Spaniard, explored the area around the Rio de la Plata, it is estimated that there were about 330,000 Indians living in what is today Argentina. Many of them were warlike nomads with a low cultural level. Solis himself was killed by the natives, and the city of Buenos Aires, founded by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536, was abandoned five years later due to conflict with the natives. The city could not be rebuilt until the expedition led by Juan de Garay in 1580.
