Dutch Winter Solstice - Holland Winter Solstice

…A banquet held during the Edo period to celebrate New Year's Day according to the solar calendar, mainly among the Dutch and Dutch scholars. At the Dutch House in Dejima, Nagasaki, Dutch residents were unable to openly celebrate Christmas due to the ban on Christianity, so instead they held Western-style banquets according to the solar calendar to imitate the Japanese custom of celebrating the "Dutch winter solstice" and the lunar New Year's celebration, and invited Japanese officials and interpreters. This was the Dutch New Year, and it spread among Japanese people as well. Edo-based Dutch scholar Otsuki Gentaku, who had attended a celebration party held in a Western-style room on the second floor of the home of Nagasaki Dejima interpreter Yoshio Kogyu, invited fellow Dutch scholars to his Edo home Dutch studies school (Shirando) to hold the Shirando Shingenkai, because the leap November 11th of the 6th year of the Kansei era, the year in which he had his first conversation with a Dutchman who was visiting Edo, fell on January 1st, 1795.

…江戸期に，オランダ人や蘭学者が中心となって太陽暦で正月を祝った賀宴。長崎出島蘭館で，在留オランダ人が，キリスト教禁令下のためクリスマスを表立って祝うことができなかった代りに，日本の風習の冬至祭になぞらえて〈オランダ冬至〉を，また太陰暦の正月の祝をまねて太陽暦で洋式賀宴を開き，日本人役人や通詞（つうじ）(通訳官)らを招いていた。これがオランダ正月で，日本人の間にもひろまり，長崎出島の通詞の吉雄耕牛宅の2階洋間で開かれた賀宴に出席したことのある江戸の蘭学者大槻玄沢（おおつきげんたく）が，江戸参府のオランダ人と最初の対談経験をもった年の寛政6年閏11月11日が西暦1795年1月1日に当たることから，江戸の自宅蘭学塾(芝蘭（しらん）堂)に蘭学の同志を招き芝蘭堂新元会を開いた。…
