Of gypsy descent, his uncle was Ramón M. (1880-1949), a master of the flamenco guitar, but he learned how to play on his own without being taught by him. He began performing in bars in Madrid at around age 14, and at around age 20 was chosen as an accompanist for leading dancers. He moved to the United States around 1940, and since then has been famous as a soloist, giving recitals at New York's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall.
