A marsh and grassy wetland in southern Florida, United States. It extends west of Miami and Palm Beach, covering the area south of Lake Okeechobee. It covers an area of about 10,000 km2 . There are few trees, and many grasses such as silver grass. Swamps and floodplain sand dunes cover a large area. The terrain is almost flat, with a gradient of 3 cm per km. Most of the area is flooded for most of the year. Since 1915, parts of the southern part of Florida have been protected as flora and fauna areas, but in 1947 Everglades National Park was established, and plants such as mangroves and cypresses, and birds such as herons, egrets, and ibises became the subject of full-scale protection.
