Also called protective coloration, it refers to creatures that change their appearance to match the colors and patterns of their surroundings to hide from predators. Examples of protective coloration include the leaf butterfly, whose wings resemble dead leaves, the nocturnal moth, whose patterns are the same as tree trunks, and looper bugs, which are indistinguishable from twigs.
