His name probably means “husband of the earth” or “lord of the earth.” As his titles Enosichthōn (Earthshaker) and Gaieochos (Earthkeeper) in Homer’s epic poems indicate, he was originally the god of earthquakes and of rivers and springs that fertilize the soil. However, when worshippers of this god invaded Greece, it is thought that the ocean became his domain. However, there is still no satisfactory explanation as to why he also became the god of horses. …
