The earliest record of the “Tree of Jesse” dates back to 1097, when Guillaume de Tournay brought a candlestick in the shape of the “Tree of Jesse” from the East, and it can also be seen in the stained glass windows of the Church of Saint-Denis, made in the 12th century. Based on the passage in Isaiah 11:1 in the Old Testament, “A shoot will come out of the stump of Jesse (the father of David), and from its roots a branch will grow up that will bear fruit, and the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him,” the tree depicts branches (or grape vines) growing from the chest or mouth of the sleeping elderly Jesse, and the branches leading to the central figure of Christ represent the successive kings of Judea. …
