Sleeping laugh - Seisuisho

Hanashibon (a book of humorous tales). Eight volumes. Compiled by Anrakuan Sakuden, a Jodo sect preacher, at the request of Itakura Shigemune, the Kyoto shoshidai (deputy governor of Kyoto). Completed in 1623 (Genwa 9), it was presented to Shigemune on March 17, 1628 (Kan'ei 5). The copy (wide version) contains over 1,000 hanashi (stories), while the complete version (abbreviated version and narrow version) contains 311 hanashi (stories), each divided into 42 sections. The contents are mainly humorous stories based on anecdotes from various places that Sakuden had seen and heard, the inner workings of the monk world, the behavior of warlords in the Sengoku period, folk tales, and tales from customs and books, but there are also many interpretations of scriptures and moral and enlightening tales. Most of the stories follow the format of a "punchline story" that ends with a punch line, and because Sakuden himself performed these stories on the stage during his sermons, he was later praised as the "father of rakugo." This book is a compilation of notes Sakuden took as a preaching monk on topics for his sermons. Therefore, although it is a rakugo book (a humorous story book), it also has the characteristics of a sermon book (a Buddhist book).

噺本(はなしぼん)（笑話本）。八巻。浄土宗の説教僧であった安楽庵策伝(あんらくあんさくでん)が、京都所司代板倉重宗(いたくらしげむね)の懇請によって編集したもの。1623年（元和9）に完成し、28年（寛永5）3月17日に重宗に贈呈した。写本で伝わるもの（広本）には1000余の咄(はなし)を、整版本（略本・狭本）には311の咄を収め、それぞれ42項に分けられている。内容は、策伝が見聞した各地の逸話、僧界の内情、戦国武将の行状、民間説話、風俗や書物から得た説話を材料にした笑話が主であるが、経典の解釈や教訓・啓蒙(けいもう)的な咄も多い。咄の末尾に落ちをつける「落し噺(ばなし)」の型をもつものがほとんどであり、策伝自身がこれらを説教の高座で実演したために安楽庵策伝は後世「落語の祖」とたたえられた。この書は、説教僧としての策伝が、説教話材のメモを集成したものである。したがって、噺本（笑話本）ではあるが、説教本（仏書）の性格をもっている。
