A city in the province of Hainaut in southern Belgium. Population 9,700 (1978). Located about 50 km south of Brussels, close to the border with France. Textile manufacturing is carried out here. In the 12th century, the Count of Hainaut built a castle on what had been a small settlement, making it the main city of the county, and it continued to play a military role until the 17th century. Today, the medieval city walls are well preserved, and it is a historic city with many old buildings. The carnival, which has been a tradition since the Middle Ages, is famous for a group of dancers called Gilles, who wear unique costumes and huge feather headdresses on their heads.
