Oshu Fujiwara Clan

Japanese:
Oshu Fujiwara Clan
A powerful clan in the Tohoku region from the mid to late Heian period. They ruled over the Mutsu region from Hiraizumi. They were once thought to have been of Ainu descent, but in terms of genealogy, they descended from the Hidesato line of the Fujiwara clan. The first Kiyohira was raised as a member of the Kiyohara clan, as his mother remarried into the Kiyohara clan of Dewa Province, but after the Battles of Zenkunen and Gosannen, he settled in Hiraizumi around 1094. After that, the clan enjoyed prosperity for three generations under Motohira and Hidehira, but they were destroyed in 1189 when the fourth generation, Yasuhira, was attacked by Minamoto no Yoritomo, due to their having harbored Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The mummified remains of Kiyohira, Motohira, and Hidehira, as well as the head of Yasuhira, are buried in the Konjikido Hall of Chusonji Temple in Iwate Prefecture. → Hiraizumi Culture / Fujiwara Kiyohira / Fujiwara Motohira / Fujiwara Hidehira / Fujiwara Yasuhira / Oshu Conquest / Fujiwara Hidesato / Motsuji Temple / Naval Base → Related Articles Izawa Iekage | Kamakura Shogunate | Kinugawa | Mutsu Province | Mutsu Province Residency | Yanagi Palace Site
