Eleven-faced Kannon (English name)

Japanese: 十一面観音 - じゅういちめんかんのん（英語表記）Ekadaśamukha

One of the Six Kannon Bodhisattvas who teach the Six Realms. A Kannon with 11 faces and either two or four arms. The front three faces show expressions of compassion, the left three show expressions of rage, the right three show expressions of white fangs rising, the back face shows a laughing face, and the top face shows enlightenment. In Japan, it has been worshiped since the latter half of the 7th century, and many excellent remains remain. Examples include the dry lacquer statue originally handed down to Omiwa-ji Temple and now at Shorin-ji Temple in Nara, and the wooden statues at Kogen-ji Temple in Shiga and Hokke-ji Temple in Nara, which date back to the 8th and 9th centuries, and each is a masterpiece with its own unique characteristics. It was widely worshiped by the general public during the Heian period, and there are examples all over the country, but there are particularly many around Lake Biwa.

六道を教化する六観音の一つ。 11面で2臂または4臂の観音。前3面は慈悲相，左3面は忿怒相，右3面は白牙上出相，後1面は大笑相，頂上1面は仏果を表わす。日本では7世紀後半以来信仰され，すぐれた遺品も多い。もと大御輪寺に伝わり現在奈良聖林寺にある乾漆像，滋賀向源寺，奈良法華寺の木像などは8～9世紀の遺例で，それぞれ特徴をもった代表作。平安時代には広く民間にも信仰され各地に遺例があるが，特に琵琶湖周辺に多い。
