A tactical unit formed from several battalions. Three or four regiments make up a division, a strategic unit capable of carrying out independent operations. Two or three regiments can also form a brigade, the largest tactical unit. In the former Imperial Japanese Army, three or four battalions, with 1,500 to 2,500 soldiers, were usually commanded by a colonel. Conscripts and garrison bases for peacetime soldiers were organized on a regiment-wide scale. Today's JGSDF regiments are not organized from battalions, but rather are organized into four units with four companies directly connected, and four regiments make up a division (with 9,000 soldiers).
