…Ferdinand III and Alfonso X, father and son, vigorously pursued the war of restoration and tried to unify the laws of Castile, which were in a state of chaos due to the proliferation of local laws, by translating the Visigothic law code (Fuerro Fusgo (Liber Judiciorum)) or by creating new laws (Fuerro Real, Siete Partidas). However, the partidas did not come into force as law during Alfonso X's lifetime. In 1348, during the reign of Alfonso XI, the Law of Alcalá, which determined the order of legal sources, gave the partidas legal force for the first time, but it was only placed at the bottom of the legal sources. However, in practice, the legal profession ignored the higher legal sources and used them instead, so over time the partidas became the main source of Castilian law in practice. …
