Cape Irozaki

Japanese:
Cape Irozaki

Cape Ishimurozaki is the southernmost cape on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is also written as Ishimurozaki. It belongs to Minamiizu Town. The surrounding area features a 100-meter sea cliff, an uplifted sea-cut plateau, sawtooth-shaped coves and capes, and spire-shaped rock formations made of andesite agglomerate, creating a spectacular and varied landscape that has earned it the nationally designated scenic spot "Southwest Izu Coast." Irozaki Port (Nagatsuro Port) at the back of the cove to the east of the cape was once a port for waiting out the wind. The tip of the cape is an important location, with a white lighthouse, radio relay station, and compass station erected in 1871 (Meiji 4), but it sustained damage from an active fault during the 1974 Izu Peninsula Offshore Earthquake. Irojinja Shrine, facing the sea, was built on the mast of a Sengoku ship and is also called Iro Gongen, the guardian deity of sailors. There is also Okuiro Beach. It is a 40-minute bus ride from Shimoda, and a 15-minute walk from the bus stop. There is a pleasure boat that tours the cape.
