Oshu road

Japanese: 奥州道中 - おうしゅうどうちゅう

One of the five main roads, also known as the Oshu Kaido. A modern main road that runs from Edo Nihonbashi to Senju and on to Mutsu Shirakawa. Strictly speaking, the road to Utsunomiya was part of the Nikko Dochu. There are 10 stops between Utsunomiya and Shirakawa. Generally, the Oshu Dochu includes the road that runs north of Shirakawa, through Fukushima, Sendai, Morioka, and Aomori, to Minmaya, and further to Ezo Matsumae and Hakodate, all of which are included in the Sendai-Matsumae road. In the Middle Ages, a similar route north of Shirakawa was called the Oshu Kaido, and is considered to be the successor to the ancient Tosan road.

五街道の一つで，奥州街道ともいう。江戸日本橋から千住(せんじゅ)に出，陸奥白河に至る近世の幹線道路。宇都宮までは厳密には日光道中であった。宇都宮〜白河間10宿を数える。一般には白河以北，福島・仙台・盛岡・青森を経て三厩(みんまや)に至り，さらに蝦夷松前・箱館に達する仙台・松前道も含め奥州道中と称する。中世には白河以北のほぼ同様の道筋を奥州街道と称し，これは古代東山(とうさん)道の後身とされている。
