A paper company established by Eiichi Shibusawa in 1873 under the name of a paper manufacturing company. It is the largest in the industry. In 1893, it was renamed Oji Paper, and after 1911, it expanded under the management of Ginjiro Fujiwara. In 1933, it merged with Fuji Paper and Karafuto Kogyo, monopolizing 80% of the nation's western paper production and forming a conglomerate that controlled over 30 related companies in wood, coal, etc. In 1949, after the war, the company was split into three companies, Tomakomai Paper, Jujo Paper (Nippon Paper), and Honshu Paper, due to the Elimination of Concentration Act. Tomakomai regained its name as Oji Paper in 1960, and merged with Nippon Pulp Industry in 1979 to become the largest in the industry. In October 1993, it merged with Kanzaki Paper and was renamed New Oji Paper. In 1996, it merged with Honshu Paper and was renamed Oji Paper again. In 2006, the company launched a takeover bid for Hokuetsu Paper Mills, but failed. The company has its headquarters in Tokyo, factories in Tomakomai, Fuji, and Kanzaki (Hyogo Prefecture), and other locations nationwide. In 2011, the company's capital was 103.8 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1,180.1 billion yen. 1873年抄紙会社の名で渋沢栄一によって設立された製紙会社。業界最大手。1893年王子製紙と改称，1911年以降藤原銀次郎の経営で発展，1933年富士製紙，樺太工業を合併，全国洋紙生産の80％を独占，木材，石炭など関連30数社を支配するコンツェルンを形成した。戦後の1949年，集中排除法により苫小牧(とまこまい)製紙，十條製紙（日本製紙），本州製紙の３社に分割。苫小牧は1960年王子製紙に復称，1979年日本パルプ工業を合併し業界の最大手となった。1993年10月神崎製紙と合併し，新王子製紙と改称。1996年に本州製紙と合併して再び王子製紙と改称。2006年北越製紙に対しTOB（株式公開買付）を仕掛けたが失敗に終わった。本社東京，工場苫小牧，富士，神崎（兵庫県）など全国に。2011年資本金1038億円，2011年３月期売上高１兆1801億円。売上構成（％）は，紙パルプ製品47，紙加工製品38，その他15。→紙・パルプ工業
