A Syrian-born Christian apologist and disciple of Justin. His major Greek work, the Oratory to the Greeks, attacked Greek civilization and defended the antiquity and purity of Christianity. His Syriac work, the Diatessaron, compiled in the mid-2nd century, is a compilation of the four New Testament Gospels into one story, and was widely used in Syria until the 5th century. Later, around 172, he left the church and founded the Encladis sect in the East, which was deemed a heresy due to its Gnostic tendencies and extreme asceticism.

シリア生れのキリスト教護教家。ユスティノスの弟子。ギリシア語による主著《ギリシア人への言葉》はギリシア文明を攻撃し，キリスト教の古さと純粋さを弁護したもの。また2世紀中葉に編集したシリア語による《ディアテッサロン》は新約の四福音書を一つの物語にまとめたもので，5世紀までシリアでひろく用いられた。のち172年ころ教会を去り，東方でエンクラディス派教団を創立し，グノーシス主義的傾向と極端な禁欲主義のため異端とされた。
