Pathos (English spelling)

Japanese: パトス(英語表記)pathos
Pathos (English spelling)
A neuter noun (plural pathē) derived from the Greek verb paschō (to undergo an action), it refers to an event or change that occurs in something. Aristotle called the attribute pathos in relation to the substance ousia, and Thomas Aquinas followed suit, translating the attribute as passio in Latin. In ethics, it generally refers to the emotion that arises in response to the stimulation of an object, and in modern times, it is often used to refer to an emotional surge or passion. When pronounced in the English style as pathos, it is used specifically to mean melancholy.
