A neuter noun (plural pathē) derived from the Greek verb paschō (to undergo an action), it refers to an event or change that occurs in something. Aristotle called the attribute pathos in relation to the substance ousia, and Thomas Aquinas followed suit, translating the attribute as passio in Latin. In ethics, it generally refers to the emotion that arises in response to the stimulation of an object, and in modern times, it is often used to refer to an emotional surge or passion. When pronounced in the English style as pathos, it is used specifically to mean melancholy. Pathos |
ギリシア語の動詞 paschō (動作を受ける) による中性名詞 (複数は pathē) で,あるもののなかに生じた出来事または変化をいう。アリストテレスは実体 ousiaに対して属性をパトスと呼び,トマス・アクィナスもこれにならって属性を passioとラテン語に訳している。倫理学では対象の刺激を受けて生じる感情一般をさし,特に現代では感情の高まり,激情をいう場合が多い。ペイソスと英語風に発音されるときは,特に哀愁の意味で用いられている。
