Yuzu-nembutsu Engi Emaki - Yuzu-nembutsu Engi Emaki
This is a picture scroll depicting the achievements of the monk Ryonin, who founded the Yuzu Nembutsu sect, and the merits of Nembutsu. Many were produced for the purpose of spreading the doctrine. The original was created in 1314, and one of the scrolls in the collections of the Cleveland and Chicago Art Institutes in the United States is the closest example to the original. Later, during the Eitoku and Shitoku eras (81-87), many copies (Chion-in Temple copy, Nezu Museum copy, Freer Gallery of Art copy, etc.) were made thanks to the enthusiastic promotion of the Nanboku-cho period monk Ryochin. A woodblock version (Dainembuji copy) was also published in 1890, the 7th year of the Genchu era (the 1st year of the Meitoku era). Furthermore, a colored picture book was produced based on this woodblock version. The Seiryoji copy, painted in 1414 by Rokkaku Jakusai and others, is a good example and a valuable work for understanding 15th century Yamato paintings.
