A blank shot fired by an army or warship as a sign of respect. It is fired at the arrival of a foreign head of state, government or military official, or a head of state or official making an official visit to a country. It may also be fired when a warship enters a foreign port or to welcome a foreign warship. It is not fired at night. The number of shots fired by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces is set at a minimum of 11 shots, at intervals of 3 to 5 seconds, for example, 21 shots for a foreign head of state, 19 shots for the prime minister, and 17 shots for ministers and generals. Originally, it was a custom of muzzle-loading cannons from the days of sailing ships, and firing the cannon indicated that there were no more bullets in the cannon.
