Born: December 6, 1841, Montpellier
[Died] November 28, 1870. French painter, Beaune-La Rolande. After studying medicine, he went to Paris in 1862 to study under Charles Gleyre, and became friends with Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet. He often collaborated with Monet, and showed potential to become a great Impressionist painter with his delicate sensitivity to nature and sharp sense of color, but he served in the Franco-Prussian War and was killed in battle at the Battle of Beaune-La Rolande. His representative work is "A Family Gathering" (1867, Musee d'Orsay).
