...The inhabitants of the ancient Maghreb spoke Berber languages (Libyan) and began farming early on as well as nomadic pastoralism, but by the 3rd century BC they had not yet formed a hierarchical state, remaining in the tribal confederation stage. From the area around Carthage to the Atlantic coast, the three most powerful tribes were the Massyli, the Masaesyli, and the Mauri, the first two of which are collectively called the Numidians.
