A reading book. A strange tale of revenge. Written by Santo Kyoden. Illustrated by Kitao Shigemasa. Published in 1803 (Kyowa 3). Five volumes of half-sized paper, also known as Kohata Koheiji's Tale of the Dead. This is Kyoden's second long reading book, and the story revolves around the struggles of the kabuki actor Tamagawa Kasen, who is in fact the son of Satomi ronin Anzai Kinai, Kijiro (later renamed Yamai Namimon), in his revenge, and his love for the Yamato samurai Hozumi family's daughter Katsurako. It also includes anecdotes about real-life gangsters, actors, and famous monks from the early modern period, as well as the legend of Mt. Asaka, the folk tale of the Ezuta Nyobo, and the legend of Kouketsu Castle. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
