A samurai of the Mito domain. His given name was Kaku, his pen name was Shisen, he was commonly known as Kakubei, and his pen name was Tanpaku. At the instruction of his father Sadakichi, who went by the pen name Kisai and was skilled in poetry and prose, he entered the school of Shu Shunsui in 1665. In 1683 he became an editor at Shokokan, and in 1692 he was awarded 300 koku. The following year he was appointed president of Shokokan, and played a leading role in the compilation of the Dai Nihonshi under the domain lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni. In 1714 he stepped down from his position as president, but continued to work at Shokokan and devoted himself to the task of compiling the history. From 1727 to 1728 he was also in charge of the compilation of Retsuso Kyoujutsu, and despite his severely deteriorating eyesight due to his old age he devoted himself to completing it. Although he was knowledgeable and excelled in historical studies, he always maintained a humble attitude as a scholar and was on friendly terms with Arai Hakuseki, Muro Kyusu, and Ogyu Sorai.
