Yukie Soshin - Yukie Soshin

Japanese: 雪江宗深 - せっこうそうしん
Yukie Soshin - Yukie Soshin

A Rinzai sect monk in the mid-Muromachi period. He was the founder of the restoration of Myoshin-ji Temple. He was from Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture). He first studied under Bun'ei at Goyoan, Kennin-ji Temple, but later studied under Nippo Soshun of the Kanzan school at Zuisen-ji Temple in Owari (Aichi Prefecture), and then followed Nippo's successor Giten Gensho (1393-1462) and received his inka. Hosokawa Katsumoto was a deep believer in Setsue, and invited him to listen to his teachings at the head priest of Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto. In 1462 (Kansho 3), he became the 41st abbot of Daitoku-ji Temple. He was skilled in temple management, and under the patronage of Hosokawa Katsumoto and Masamoto, father and son, he successfully restored Myoshinji Temple, which had been burned down during the Onin War. He also trained the four great masters, Kagekawa Soryu (1425-1500), Gokei Soton (1416-1500), Tokuho Zenketsu (1419-1506), and Toyo Eichou (1428-1504), and built the foundation for the rapid development of the Myoshinji school. In his later years, he retired to Kobai-in Temple within the grounds of Myoshinji Temple, and passed away on June 2, 1822, at the age of 79. He was given the imperial posthumous name of Zen Master Butsunichi Shinsho.
