Atisha - Atisha (English spelling)

Indian thinker and religious leader. Also known as Dīpańkaraśrījñāna. Born as the second son of King Zahor of India. He became a monk at the age of 29 and studied Buddhism, especially the mysteries of late esoteric Buddhism. Invited by the king of Ngari in western Tibet, he entered Tibet in 1042 and over the next 13 years, he revived and reformed Tibetan Buddhism, which had been in decline. The period after his time is called the "late period of Buddhism's spread" in Tibet. His basic ideas, as shown in his main work, Treatise on the Path of Enlightenment, were inherited by the Ka-dam sect, founded by his disciple Dromtön Gyalwe Jungney (1005-1064), and further influenced Tsongkhapa's Treatise on the Stages of the Path of Enlightenment, the greatest thinker in Tibetan Buddhism. He was also a forerunner of Tsongkhapa in that he respected the teachings of Chandrakirti (the Lunar Pratyekabuddha) within Indian Madhyamaka thought.

インドの思想家、宗教家。別名をディーパンカラシュリージュニャーナDīpańkaraśrījñānaともいう。インドのザホル国王の第2子として生まれる。29歳で出家して、仏教、とくに後期密教の奥儀(おうぎ)を究めた。西チベットのガリ国の王の招きを受けて、1042年にチベットに入り、以後13年間の教化により、低迷していたチベット仏教を復興、改革した。彼の時代以後をチベットでは「後期仏教伝播(でんぱ)時代」という。主著『菩提道燈論(ぼだいどうとうろん)』に示される彼の基本思想は、弟子ドムトンDromtön Gyalwe Jungney（1005―1064）を開祖とするカーダム派に継承され、さらにチベット仏教最大の思想家ツォンカパの『菩提道次第論(ぼだいどうしだいろん)』に影響を与えた。また彼は、インドの中観(ちゅうがん)思想のなかでとくにチャンドラキールティ（月称(げっしょう)）の学説を尊重した点でも、ツォンカパの先駆者であった。
