Ginkakuji Temple

Japanese: 銀閣寺
Ginkakuji Temple
This is the common name for Higashiyama Jisho-ji Temple, a Rinzai sect temple of the Shokoku-ji school located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. At the end of the 15th century, Ashikaga Yoshimasa's mountain villa Higashiyamadono was turned into a Zen temple in accordance with his will. The temple's name comes from Yoshimasa's posthumous name Jisho-in, and its common name comes from the name of the Kannon Hall (national treasure), Ginkakuji. There was a plan to stamp Ginkakuji with silver leaf in imitation of the Kinkakuji at Rokuon-ji Temple, but this was never realized. The garden has been designated a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Cultural Assets of Ancient Kyoto."
