...Michelangelo's statement that "the compass is in the eye" denied the traditional aesthetics of measurement and sketching, and from then on, the traditional theory of drawing and the innovative theory of drawing that said that drawing is nothing but an expression of subjectivity caused a controversy. Among them, Anton Francesco Doni (1513-74) said that "disegnare" does not necessarily mean drawing, but that "disegno" is already the act of coming up with an idea (1547). The first theorist to write down Michelangelo's idea that disegno was an act of thought, not a means of imitating nature, was probably Benedetto Varchi (1502-65), director of the Accademia Fiorentina. ...
