This fish market was held in Nihonbashi from the early modern period until the Showa period. In 1590 (Tensho 18), Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo, and at that time Mori Magoemon, the headman of Tsukuda village in Nishinari county, Setsu Province, led over 30 fishermen from Tsukuda and Owada villages to Edo. They were bestowed with a riverside site in Nihonbashi Hon-Odawara-cho and were given permission to engage in fishing in the rivers and seas around Edo. Part of the catch was provided to the Shogunate's dining hall (it is said that they initially supplied mainly whitebait), and the rest was sold in the city. As the number of fellow fishermen increased and fish sales flourished, Mori Kuemon (Magoemon's eldest son) and others opened a sales floor in Nihonbashi Hon-Odawara-cho during the Keicho period (1596-1615) to receive and sell the remaining fish that had been supplied to the Shogunate.
