...A general term for insects that directly harm humans and livestock, or damage crops and their products, and is also the opposite of beneficial insects. Insects are often not clearly distinguished as pests or beneficial, and are not even born as harmful or beneficial, but rather refer to interests that are centered on humans. For example, the feeding habits of some insects are different between adult and larval stages, so even if the larvae of some insects are pests, such as butterflies, the adults may not be considered pests because they serve as pollinators or are aesthetically pleasing.
