The Book of Haggai

One of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament. It is a collection of prophecies by Haggai, a prophet active in Jerusalem from August to mid-December 520 BC during the reign of Darius I (reigned 522-486 BC) after the Babylonian captivity. Although it is only two chapters long, each paragraph has a date and accurately conveys Haggai's prophetic activities. Haggai predicted the arrival of the Messianic era as Persian rule weakened, and together with Zechariah, he resumed the construction of the temple in Jerusalem, demanded a temple religion that excluded the Samaritans, and offered sacrifices, and prophesied the Messianic rule of Zerubbabel, a descendant of David.

『旧約聖書』中の十二小預言書の一つ。ダリウス1世（在位前522～前486）治世の紀元前520年8月から12月中ごろまでエルサレムで活動したバビロン捕囚後の預言者ハガイの預言を集めたもの。わずか2章の分量であるが、各段落に日付があり、ハガイの預言活動を正確に伝えている。それは、ペルシア支配の弱体化にメシア時代の到来を予知したハガイが、ゼカリヤといっしょにエルサレムの神殿建築を再開させ、サマリア人を排除した神殿宗教と犠牲の捧(ささ)げ物を求め、ダビデの子孫ゼルバベルのメシア支配を預言したものである。
