Conrail - Conrail (English spelling)

Consolidated Rail Corporation is a major railroad company based in the northeastern United States. It was established in 1976 under federal administrative guidance by the merger of the bankrupt Penn Central Transportation Company, the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the Erie Lackawanna, the Lehigh & Hudson River, the Reading, and the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines. Its total length is 19,630 km (1995). Its railroad network stretches throughout the eastern states, from Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River in the west to the Canadian border in the north, the Ohio River in the south, and the Atlantic coast in the east, covering the most important regions of the American economy. Since its founding, it was operated as a national railroad by the United States government, but was privatized in 1987 and then split up and acquired by CSX Corporation and Norfolk Southern Railway in 1998.

アメリカ合衆国北東部を地盤とした大手鉄道会社、コンソリデーテッド鉄道会社Consolidated Rail Corporationの略号。破産したペン・セントラル鉄道Penn Central Transportation Companyを中心として、ニュー・ジャージー・セントラル鉄道Central Railroad of New Jersey、エリー・ラッカワナErie Lackawanna、リーハイ・アンド・ハドソン・リバーLehigh & Hudson River、リーハイ・バレーLehigh Valley、レディングReading、ペンシルベニア・レディング・シーショア・ラインズPennsylvania Reading Seashore Linesなどの各鉄道が、1976年に連邦政府の行政指導下に合併して設立された。総延長1万9630キロメートル（1995）。その路線網は東部諸州一円に広がり、西はミシガン湖とミシシッピ川、北はカナダ国境、南はオハイオ川、東は大西洋岸に及び、アメリカ経済のもっとも重要な地域を覆っている。設立以来アメリカ政府の国有鉄道として運営されたが、1987年に民営化、さらに1998年にCSXコーポレーションとノーフォーク・サザン鉄道に分割買収された。
