In 1389, the Ottoman Empire, which had been advancing in the Balkans since 1354, pacified Thrace and Bulgaria and closed in on Serbia, when Serbian leader Lazar, supported by Bosnian king Tvrtko and Wallachian prince Mircea, fought against the Ottoman army of Murad I. The Serbian side was defeated, but the main reasons for this were the inability of Western European countries to provide support due to the plague, the Peasants' War, and the Hundred Years' War, the powerlessness of the Pope, the conflict between Venice and Genoa, the decline of the Byzantine Empire, as well as the stagnation of feudal society within the Balkans and political and religious (Christian and Bogomil) divisions.

1354年以来バルカンに進出していたオスマン朝が，トラキア，ブルガリアを平定してセルビアに迫った89年，セルビアの有力者ラザルLazar公がボスニア王トブルトコTvrtkoやワラキア公ミルチャMirceaらの支援を得てムラト1世のオスマン軍と戦った戦闘。セルビア側は敗れたが，その原因としては，西欧諸国がペストや農民戦争や百年戦争のために支援しえなかったこと，教皇の無力，ベネチアとジェノバの対立，ビザンティン帝国の衰退のほか，バルカン諸国内部での封建社会の停滞性や政治的･宗教的(キリスト教とボゴミル派)分裂が重要である。
