It is an insurmountable anxiety and fear of going out onto the streets or in squares, or of being left behind in such places, and is primarily an expression of neurosis. The European term is based on the compound Greek words agora (square) and phobos (fear). Affected people have difficulty going outside the house, but anxiety is often alleviated and they are able to go out if accompanied by a close friend. Psychodynamically, many sufferers have strong distorted ties with their parents, and are conflicted about independence and dependence. [Shimosaka Kozo]
