An island located in the north of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. It belongs to Ojika Town, Kitamatsuura District. Its area is 12.22 square kilometers. The island is based on a basalt lava field that spreads just above sea level. About 20 mortar-shaped volcanoes of various sizes, including Honjo-dake (111 meters), Ban-dake (105 meters), and Atago-dake (85 meters), and pyroclastic cones, have erupted with their bases touching each other, and these are connected like beads to form the island. Volcanic bombs and volcanic tears are often found in the volcanic gravel, and circular depressions called daki can be seen on the coast. The neighboring islands of Koroshima and Oshima are also either individual volcanic cones or the combined remains of several volcanic cones. Population: 2,546 (2009).
