A figure in the Old Testament. Also called Huram. A skilled bronzesmith from Tyre, he was called to Solomon when he was building the temple, and is said to have done many remarkable things, including the construction of the two pillars of Jachin and Boaz (1 Kings 7:13 and others). As a man who was familiar with the mysteries of architecture as a "sacred art," he was considered the legendary founder of Freemasonry in later generations. The king of Tyre who supplied Israel with materials and engineers during the time of David and Solomon was also called Hiram. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
