Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Cathedral

Located in Canterbury, 85 km southeast of London, this cathedral is the headquarters of the Church of England. Its origins date back to the 6th century, when Canterbury became the capital of the Saxon Kingdom of Kent and the seat of England's first bishop (later elevated to archbishopric). As vividly depicted in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, it was a popular pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. The current cathedral was built between 1070 and 1503, and while the original Romanesque style can be seen in the double east-west transepts, the overall structure has strong elements of the Perpendicular style unique to English Late Gothic. On the left side of the west transept is a memorial site for Archbishop Thomas Becket, who was martyred in 1170. In 1988, it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with St. Augustine's Abbey and St. Martin's Church (World Heritage Site).
