1900 (Meiji 33)-1952 (Showa 27). Born in Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. Aesthetician, Deputy Director of the National Diet Library. After graduating from the Department of Philosophy at Kyoto University, he founded the magazines Sekai Bunka (1935-1937) and Doyobi (Saturday) (1936-1937) with Kuno Osamu and others in opposition to the prewar fascist trend, but was arrested in 1937 (Showa 12) for violating the Peace Preservation Law. After World War II, he became director of Onomichi City Library in 1945 (Showa 20), and after many twists and turns, he became deputy director of the National Diet Library, which was established in 1948 (Showa 23). From June 1949 (Showa 24) to May 1952 (Showa 27), he served as chairman of the Japan Library Association, rallying together the library world in the midst of the postwar chaos, and worked hard to enact the Library Law. He wrote the essay "The Logic of the Committee" (1936) and the book "The Logic of Beauty and the Group" (1962), among others, and also developed a functionalist theory on libraries.
