A stool is a single-person seat with no backrest or armrests. It is used as a simple auxiliary chair or as a substitute for a decorative chair. However, because it has no backrest, it can tire the lower back and is not suitable for long-term use. When using it for work, the seat should be raised and care should be taken not to hunch over. A stool is the equivalent of a Japanese floor cushion. Western-style toilets are also sometimes called stools.
