〘名〙① 遠い将来まで見通して、深く考えること。→深謀遠慮。※江吏部集(1010‐11頃)下・暮秋陪左相府書閣「応似謙光君子徳、延齢遠慮是為媒」※源平盛衰記(14C前)二六「遠慮(エンリョ)賢くして、角(かく)用意有けるか」② (━する) 他人に対して、言葉や行動を控え目にすること。気がねして出しゃばらないこと。※虎寛本狂言・鬮罪人(室町末‐近世初)「夫は一段と能らう。遠慮なしにいふて見よ」③ (━する) ある物事をするのを断わること。また、ある場所から退くこと。辞すること。※鵤荘引付‐永正一一年(1514)「先以用水を一円に小宅へ三个日分令遠慮、可遣之由」※浄瑠璃・堀川波鼓(1706頃か)上「其座をゑんりょし立にけり」④ 弔意を表わし、悲しみをともにするなどの理由で、祝いごとをさし控えること。⑤ 江戸時代、武士や僧侶に科した軽い謹慎刑。居宅での蟄居(ちっきょ)を命ぜられるもので、門は閉じなければならないが、くぐり戸は引き寄せておけばよく、夜中の目立たない時の出入は許された。※禁令考‐別巻・棠蔭秘鑑・亨・一〇三(1704)「遠慮 門を立、くぐりは引寄置、夜中不目立様に 通路は不苦」⑥ 江戸時代、武士で、親族に不幸があったり、伝染性の病人や罪人が出たりした場合、その出勤、または、謁見をさし控えること。※禁令考‐前集・第三・巻二一・延宝八年(1680)一一月二八日「疱瘡痳疹水痘遠慮之事」
