A city in the central Punjab province in northern Pakistan. Population 294,000 (1981). Located in the southern part of Jechu (Charj) Doab, surrounded by the Jhelum and Chenab rivers, on the main road leading west from Lahore. The city has a relatively new history, having been established in 1903 as the center of the irrigation settlements that developed following the opening of the Lower Jhelum Canal (1901). It distributes wheat, rice, sorghum, cotton, etc. from the surrounding agricultural areas, and is home to light industries such as flour milling, rice polishing, oil refining, and soap manufacturing. パキスタン北部,パンジャーブ州中央部の都市。人口29万4000(1981)。ジェラム川とチェナーブ川とに囲まれたジェチュ(チャージュ)・ドアーブ南部にあり,ラホールから西方へ至る主要道路上に位置する。歴史は新しく,下ジェラム用水路の開通(1901)により開発された用水路入植地の中心として1903年に建設。周辺の農業地帯からの小麦,米,モロコシ,綿花などを集散し,製粉,精米,製油,セッケンなどの軽工業が立地する。
