…A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family that grows on the forest edges of mountainous areas (illustration). It is also called anemone. It has a white rhizome that spreads horizontally underground. The above-ground parts emerge in early spring and flower, and in early summer they die, leaving behind fruit, making it a short-lived spring-flowering plant. The basal leaves have long petioles, are bifoliate and compound, and the leaflets are notched. The flower stalk grows from the tip of the rhizome, is 18-30 cm tall, and does not usually have basal leaves at its base. It does not branch, and has three whorls of stem leaves, with one flower at the top. Often these single stem leaves are called involucre, and the individual stem leaves are called bracts. …
