The oldest monk biography in Japan. Compiled by the Tang Monk Shitaku. 10 volumes. Published in 788. Contains biographies of monks and laypeople such as the high priests Ganjin and Dosen, Prince Shotoku, Emperor Shomu, and Empress Komyo, as well as Fumie Jozan and Tankai Mifune.
