The oldest monk biography in Japan. Compiled by the Tang Monk Shitaku. 10 volumes. Published in 788. Contains biographies of monks and laypeople such as the high priests Ganjin and Dosen, Prince Shotoku, Emperor Shomu, and Empress Komyo, as well as Fumie Jozan and Tankai Mifune. 日本最古の僧伝。撰者は唐僧思託。 10巻。延暦7 (788) 年の成立。高僧鑑真，道せんや聖徳太子，聖武天皇，光明皇后をはじめ，文室浄三，淡海三船など，僧俗の伝記を収録したもの。現在散逸し，わずかに『日本高僧伝要文抄』に逸文がある。
