Oguni Cedar

Japanese: 小国杉 - おぐにすぎ

A regional brand of Kumamoto prefecture, Kyushu and Okinawa region.
Cedar timber produced in Oguni-cho and Minamioguni-cho in Aso-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture. Forestry in Oguni has a history of approximately 250 years, dating back to the Horeki era (1751-1764) of the Edo period, when the Hosokawa clan ordered each household to hang 25 cedar stalks on a pole. Oguni cedar, also known as hokosugi, continues to grow until the later years of its life. In March 2008, it was registered as a regional collective trademark with the Japan Patent Office. The trademark registration number is 5120442. The owners of the regional collective trademark are the Oguni Town Forestry Association and the Aso Forestry Association.

熊本県阿蘇郡小国町及び南小国町産の杉木材。小国の林業はおよそ250年の歴史があり、江戸時代の宝暦年間(1751年〜1764年)に細川藩が各戸25本の杉穂のじかざしを命じたことに由来する。小国杉は鉾杉とも呼ばれ、晩年まで成長を続ける。2008(平成20)年3月、特許庁の地域団体商標に登録された。商標登録番号は第5120442号。地域団体商標の権利者は、小国町森林組合・阿蘇森林組合。
