A woody climbing plant of the Aristolochiaceae family (APG classification: Aristolochiaceae). It grows in mountain forests and often twines around trees. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate, sometimes divided into three lobes, heart-shaped at the base, somewhat thick, and densely hairy on both sides. A single flower appears in the leaf axil in May-June. The calyx tube is a unique cylindrical shape that is strongly bent into a J-shape, and the tip suddenly expands into three shallow lobes. The upper surface of the calyx lobes is greenish yellow with brown stripes. There are six stamens and six pistils. The capsule is about 5 cm long and oblong, with six ridges, and splits into six when ripe. It is distributed along the Pacific coast from the southern Kanto region westward, Shikoku, Kyushu, and further into Chugoku.
