…American folk singer, guitarist, banjoist, and composer. Born in New York City, he studied folk music from an early age under the influence of his father, Charles S. (1886-1978), a well-known ethnomusicologist. Around 1940, he formed a group with Woody Guthrie (1912-67) and other friends and began performing. After World War II, he continued to sing while becoming deeply involved in social activities such as the anti-war movement, and wrote songs with socially conscious messages such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" …

Woody Guthrie (1912-67), who is considered the father of modern American folk song, was born in Oklahoma and grew up listening to and singing traditional folk songs. Like many of his fellow countrymen who abandoned farming and became refugees during the depression, he moved to California, where he came into contact with the oppressed poor and wrote folk-style songs about their experiences and feelings, which he broadcast on the radio. Eventually, Pete Seeger and others joined him, and they formed a group and recorded records. ...
